The exciting Lumix DMC-GH4 or just GH4 for short is a very exciting camera from Panasonic. It is exciting for the many reasons, most notably because it is a native 4K camera capable of shooting video or stills.
The build quality is amazing, built from a solid weather-sealed magnesium alloy body. The internal specs are impressive too with a 3” OLED touchscreen monitor, OLED EVF Viewfinder monitor and 49 point AF Autofocus.
It is equipped with a 4/3” MFT (micro four thirds) 16-Megapixel sensor and a 4-CPU Venus Engine which gives the camera plenty of low-light performance (a maximum ISO of 25,600) when shooting RAW stills, JPEG stills or UHD 4K (3840 x 2160) @ 24p/25p/30p. It also shoots digital cinema spec DCI (digital cinema initiatives) 4K (4096 x 2160) at 24p/25p in a Quicktime MOV or MP4 wrapper. For optimal quality we recommend the DCI 4K resolution recording mode as it uses a 1:1 pixel map of the sensor, so no in-camera scaling or cropping.
The MFT 4/3” sensor is a great all-rounder with good low-light performance and shallow depth of field, but also small enough to be very light and compact, ideal for a DJI Ronin or MoVI stabiliser. We supply the GH4 with a Metabones MFT 4/3” to Canon EF SpeedBooster S adapter, included free of charge. We can supply a PL mount adapter if required.
The quality of recording codecs on offer is also outstanding from AVCHD, AVCHD Progressive to 200 Mbps All-I (All-Intra) and 100 Mbps IPB. The compression is 4:2:0 8-bit when recording to SDHC cards (internal) or 4:2:2 8-bit and 4:2:2 10-bit when recording to the Atomos Shogun 4K Monitor/Recorder (external). Capture 1080p at 200 Mbps and 4K at 100 Mbps.
The GH4 has versatile frame rates with undercrank and overcrank options. You can shoot from 2 fps up to 96 fps! The GH4 is a global camera too. It also features some of the professional camera tools that you would find on bigger cameras like Focus Peaking, exposure Zebras and a multitude of picture profiles.
We can also supply the GH4 with the DMY-YAGH a professional 4K video interface that attaches to the bottom of the camera and then additionally provides 2 x XLR inputs including Phantom power, independent volume gain controls and audio level meters. Crucially the YAGH also provides 2 x 3G-SDI BNC connectors and 2 x HD-SDI BNC connectors this allows for QUAD-LINK SDI 4K video out at 4:2:2 10-bit and dual-link 4:2:2 10-bit 1080p up to 60 fps. It can also be configured to output 4 x 1080p streams up to 30 fps and all with timecode. Very impressive stuff, clearly this isn’t a DSLR.
